Aranya Art Center is a kunsthalle for contemporary art, powered by Aranya, a seaside community in Beidaihe, China. Its architecture is designed by Neri&Hu. Its heavy volume, dark facade and concrete wall tiles with different textures make the exterior of the art center look like a tough rock. The spiral staircases inside the building connect the open-air atrium at the bottom with each exhibition gallery. Since its opening in May 2019, the Aranya Art Center has presented more than 20 exhibitions, including group exhibitions Long Day, études, How Far, How Close and Studio Visits, as well as comprehensive museum exhibitions of Anselm Reyle, Sylvie Fleury, Tao Hui, Gabriel Kuri, Jiang Zhi and Yuko Mohri. Aranya Art Center's first branch, Aranya Art Center North, opened on September 22, 2024.
Aranya Art Center North?
Aranya North Coast is located about 1 kilometer north of Beidaihe Gold Coast, near the estuary of the Dapu River into Bohai Bay.
Aranya Art Center North is a comprehensive art venue designed by renowned Japanese architect Kazunari Sakamoto and Chinese architect Liu Yichun. Occupying 3,843 square meters with a total interior area of more than 5,000 square meters, it will serve as a hub for future exhibitions and cultural activities at Aranya North Coast. The center features an indoor plaza of over 2,000 square meters, surrounded by six box-like galleries that open out from the center like “vitrines” to connect the interior and exterior space and catalyze artistic encounters for those who pass by.
AAC North will continue to focus on the works of pioneering contemporary artists from China and abroad with an emphasis on community engagement and the transformation of community activities into exhibitions, with a rich offering of artistic and cultural programs including the Aranya Winter Residency Exhibition Series.
