I welcome everybody here tonight ! Thank-you everybody for coming!
I would like to firstly thank Xu Liaoyuan and Zhang Qunying for makingus so welcome in Chengduwith their generous hospitality! Since we arrived, we have been in greatcompany, and surrounded by art, - and have been introduced to the best of Chengdu cuisine! Xu, I have really appreciated this beautiful architectural space thatyou have created in the XLY MoMA, I have also appreciated your incredibletalent and artworks. I think you are a fearless artist and this is something tobe admired!
Xu and Zhang, thank you very much for hosting this exhibition and to theteam of wonderful people who have been helping install the exhibition and havespent many hours negotiating a few difficulties along the way. Xiao Ya,Ivy and Edmund.
I would like to thank my friend Professor Zhao Peisheng for many things, his friendship; for introducing me to his work; and for his invitation toexhibit our works together - which brings us here tonight.Through Zhao’s art he has provoked me to try to uncover somethinghidden, firstly to dig deeper into why the Chinese love rocks, and why theattention to surface is important. The layers of cultural meaning that areassociated with these things has greatly enriched me! Thank-you!Zhao’s work has greatly intrigued me since we first met in 2009.Zhao’s ownabstract sculptured ceramics are vital objects. I love their intimate scale, luscious surface texture, they are lively, yet still! They are unadorned – havereduced colour – reduced emotion, they distill the essential qualities…thistype of work invokes associations with the artists philosophy and intent. His workssuggest the known qualities of Taihu rock but don’t represent, they insteadallow us to think of their meanings anew, skewing us sideways from thewell-known forms of scholar rocks to bring our attention to what they are, notwhat they represent. My starting point for these newworks is inspired from many visits to the beautiful Chinese gardens around Jiangsu. Thegardens are a locus where ideas and objects coalesce, form connections andrelatedness. In this work I have attempted to gain a deeper culturalunderstanding and to consider the cultural framing through which we see theworld. And to give expression to my feelings about how I engage with thenatural world.
I wanted tomake a series of assemblages that would offer multiple perspectives and viewpoints of how we see the world.
Such as in the topographyof the landscape, the micro world and the macro world, and I tried to considerthe patterns of energy that run through all matter as I was making the workthrough attention to scale, my printing plates made of marble dust, and throughthe slow dripping of ink that created the forms.
It isimpossible not to consider the cultural dimension to my work – I see the fiveworks I firstly made after Gao Yang (old master who produced paintings for theten bamboo studio manual – ??? 譜) as beingtranslations. I have translated five works with consideration to trying to understandthe qualities inherent in chinese rocks Shou, zhou lou, tou, ….that are on display. The other works followed – attempting to findexpression in the inner world of forms.I hope you can appreciate my works.Alongside Professor Zhao’s works, they have the best context I couldimagine! Once again I would like to welcome everybody tonight! Thanks to the friends from the Australian Consulate in Chengdu who are heretonight.Consul Gail Barnes,Consul Mathew Robertson,Brodie Burnes-williamson,Michael Feakes from Austcham.
I would alsolike to Acknowledge the sister city relationship of 5 years between Perth and Chengdu- aiming to enhance trade and cultural relationships.
For your support along the way – thankyou!
The Confucius institute in Perthwho keep me engaged with many cultural activities.
And my husband Stephen for his support in being here in Chengdu with me.
