A Brief Abstract from the Interview with Mr. Zhao Mi - the famous painter from Chengdu
問：什么是藝術？（你對藝術有怎樣的深刻理解？）
Q: What’s your understanding of art?
答：藝術是曼妙而不可言的，不確定性就是藝術。它不屬于一個可以被完全定義化的范疇。但可以肯定地說，創造和發展藝術，就是我享受生命的過程。
A: Art is fantastic. Uncertainty is art. It cannot be exactly defined. But what’s definite is that I enjoy life in the process of creating art and developing art.
問：那請問藝術給你帶來了什么？（藝術帶給你什么樣的啟示？）
Q: So what enlightenments has art brought you?
答：一言難盡。藝術給了我很多的東西，它使你情感豐富，也使你情緒無常，但主要還是讓我更能夠沉浸在思考的快樂中。在我作畫時，各種情緒都有，愛恨交融，甚至你會想到逃離，那是情感的極至。
A: It’s such a long story. Art has brought me a lot of things. It can make you emotional. But most importantly, I’m able to emerge myself in the happiness of thinking. When I’m painting, there’s a complex feeling of love and hatred. There were even moments that I thought of escaping, and that was the ultimate of my emotions.
問：你認為藝術是虛擬的嗎？它與現實的世界之間存在著怎樣的矛盾和統一？
Q: Do you think that art is artificial? What are the contradictions and reunifications between art and real life?
答：這是一個很好的提問。首先，我們與之共存的世界是一個紛繁復雜的世界，同時，作為藝術產生的母體，它卻又需要藝術的多元化來使人們深刻地認知這個世界。人的生存環境，人的社會貢獻，都會在一定的意識形態和物質形態上用藝術的方式表達出來。其次，我所創造的藝術存在著永遠的矛盾。簡單的藝術只是迎和了這個世界，是一種表象的、物化了的工具，沒有矛盾。但在我的作品中，你往往能夠看到很多與社會主流相悖的東西，而這些恰恰就是我賴以延續我藝術生命的矛盾點，如果有一天，欣賞我的畫的人們在我的作品中看不到這些東西的時候，那就表明我應該再尋我的，新的矛盾點去發展我的藝術。
A: This is a very good question. First of all, we co-exist in a complicated world. At the same time, as the origin of art, the world needs the diversity of art to make people have a deeper understanding of the world. The environment we live in and people’s contributions to the society will be illustrated by art in a conceptual and materialistic way. Secondly, contradictions always exist in the art I’ve created. Simple art just meets the taste of the world. It’s a superficial and materialized tool without contradictions. But in my works, you can always find things going against the mainstream that eventually keep my artistic life going on. If people appreciating my works cannot find these things in my paintings one day, it means that I should start looking for a new contradictory point to develop my art.
