前言
引言
二零零五年,澳門藝術(shù)博物館在國內(nèi)多個(gè)美術(shù)單位的大力支持下,成功舉辦 “以身觀身──中國行為藝術(shù)文獻(xiàn)展及邀請展”。同時(shí)更在法國駐香港及澳門總領(lǐng)事館的特別安排下,多位優(yōu)秀藝術(shù)家獲安排前往法國進(jìn)行藝術(shù)交流,此舉使得展覽的意義不祇停留在展示和保存上,還可以令藝術(shù)家到外地觀摩交流,拓寬視野,使活動更富意義。兩岸四地及國際著名策展人、藝評專家等,對我館為華人地區(qū)的當(dāng)代藝術(shù)所作的貢獻(xiàn),給予極大的正面評價(jià)。
二零零八年,澳門藝術(shù)博物館再次在中國各大美院、港臺藝術(shù)單位的協(xié)助下,透過徵集作品舉辦“以身觀身──中國行為藝術(shù)文獻(xiàn)展2008”,盼繼續(xù)收集、保存中國當(dāng)代行為藝術(shù)的珍貴文獻(xiàn)資料,并藉此進(jìn)一步探討、呈現(xiàn)及推動中國當(dāng)代藝術(shù)的發(fā)展。我館很榮幸邀請到海內(nèi)外著名當(dāng)代藝術(shù)家、行為藝術(shù)策展人及專家學(xué)者一同組成入藏評選委員會,從收到的作品中評選出收藏作品,并在收藏作品中遴選出參展作品。
行為藝術(shù)是中國當(dāng)代藝術(shù)領(lǐng)域中獨(dú)特的表現(xiàn)形式。它經(jīng)常與中國傳統(tǒng)文化和價(jià)值觀發(fā)生直接的碰撞和密切的對話。博大精深的中華文化及圓融包容且具普世價(jià)值的儒家思想,都給當(dāng)代藝術(shù)家們提供了創(chuàng)作的穩(wěn)厚基石。正當(dāng)怨懟復(fù)仇威脅著和平發(fā)展,正當(dāng)貧富懸殊成為全球化頭上的那把達(dá)摩克利斯利劍,當(dāng)代藝術(shù)家正以作品不斷提醒世人,以作品誘發(fā)思考。
身體介入的必然性
行為藝術(shù)主要以身體作為媒介,透過實(shí)施過程以呈現(xiàn)行為創(chuàng)作意念,以個(gè)人化的展演作為與觀者的溝通方法,呈現(xiàn)模式多種多樣,如行為現(xiàn)場展演、行為錄像、行為擺拍攝影、非現(xiàn)場行為記錄、甚至利用網(wǎng)絡(luò)視像實(shí)施行為作品等。行為藝術(shù)作為當(dāng)代藝術(shù)的一個(gè)重要類別,其本質(zhì)就是個(gè)人化的實(shí)驗(yàn),作品具有反權(quán)威、挑戰(zhàn)標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化的特質(zhì)。作品往往以先鋒之姿遠(yuǎn)離傳統(tǒng)藝術(shù)的審美觀念,創(chuàng)作強(qiáng)調(diào)觀念先行,“表演”也不同于傳統(tǒng)的定義,它不服從于任何既定程式或框架,往往以貼近日常性的動作為基調(diào),以一種使日常變異的陌生化手法有意識地呈現(xiàn)藝術(shù)家企圖表達(dá)的某種觀念。
對于行為藝術(shù)家來說,身體成為了他們唯一及最有力的表達(dá),所以身體往往承載了作者最大意圖的指向,身體同時(shí)也是具有最大共同性與唯一獨(dú)特性這兩種性質(zhì)的工具,身體通過不同方法如偽裝、變異、扭曲等,以達(dá)到某種顛覆、挑戰(zhàn)、反抗、叛亂、宣告等作用,架筑起整個(gè)展演,以反映生活中一些個(gè)人經(jīng)驗(yàn),以及社會及其文化發(fā)展中的某些特殊現(xiàn)象。身體,成了作品裡不可替代的符號與語言,同樣的身體,在不同的使用下可以產(chǎn)生出不同的意涵。以下是身體在作品中較常見的幾種特質(zhì):一、以非暴力的身體殘暴方式來對社會作出反思。行為藝術(shù)其中一種特質(zhì)是作品裡經(jīng)常出現(xiàn)對社會狀況的反思與批判。不少作品以身體來進(jìn)行某種具有破壞性的殘暴行為,以對應(yīng)其周遭社會問題與壓力,造成強(qiáng)大的感官與一般行為認(rèn)知上的沖擊,以身體作出強(qiáng)而有力的控訴、申述,令觀眾產(chǎn)生一種震撼與難忘的視覺經(jīng)驗(yàn),以激起思考的可能。但由于此種行為充其量只是使用自己身體進(jìn)行,并未對他人構(gòu)成傷害與威脅,是一種企圖以“非暴力”來表現(xiàn)“暴力”的行為。二、身體極致的呈現(xiàn)。許多行為藝術(shù)作品都嘗試以身體挑戰(zhàn)某種極限,無論是生理上或心理上,嘗試超越己設(shè)定的人類生存條件與能力,把身體進(jìn)行“非人性化”的處理,不斷挑戰(zhàn)與打破觀眾既有的思考邏輯,拆去既定框架,引起刺激與討論,其顛覆性是明顯的。三、身體和自然的探索。有些行為藝術(shù)作品以身體作為最本質(zhì)的元素,把身體與其他自然的本質(zhì)存在聯(lián)結(jié)在一起,以此探討人與自然之間的微妙關(guān)係,呈現(xiàn)關(guān)于生存的思考。四、個(gè)體與公共空間之間的角力。有些作品刻意設(shè)定在一個(gè)具有特殊意義的公共空間中進(jìn)行,目的是個(gè)體通過作品來與公共空間中所代表的歷史意義、權(quán)力象徵,構(gòu)成對話或某種挑戰(zhàn),與地方權(quán)力進(jìn)行角力。
面對當(dāng)下 展望未來
“以身觀身──中國行為藝術(shù)文獻(xiàn)展2008”,展出二十七位藝術(shù)家的三十八件行為藝術(shù)作品,他們分別來自長沙、成都、重慶、蘭州、長春、西安、杭州、西寧、廣州、昆明、北京及港澳臺等地,作品充分反映近三年來中國行為藝術(shù)的發(fā)展?fàn)顩r,觀眾可以通過作品了解藝術(shù)家如何以身體來進(jìn)行各種的介入與觀察,以身體行動進(jìn)行書寫,以自然、生理、記憶、物質(zhì)、文化、身份、歷史及空間等來呈現(xiàn)不同的創(chuàng)作觀念。
是次作品徵集的章程中,我們并沒有列明行為藝術(shù)的定義,作品的范圍也不設(shè)明晰的界限,因?yàn)楝F(xiàn)在的作品形式愈趨多樣,不少藝術(shù)家嘗試以跨媒介、跨領(lǐng)域的手法來呈現(xiàn)作品。故此,我們更注重藝術(shù)家個(gè)人的先鋒性表達(dá),以及作品裡的觀念啟迪,我們堅(jiān)信行為藝術(shù)也需要多樣性。在“以身觀身──中國行為藝術(shù)文獻(xiàn)庫”中,澳門藝術(shù)博物館共收錄了四百三十九件中國行為藝術(shù)作品,已可歸納成多個(gè)不同主題的展覽,把這些作品推介到其他國家、地區(qū)進(jìn)行展覽和交流──這正是我們的初衷。擺在前面要做的事情還有許多,行為藝術(shù)的推廣與發(fā)展還有一段很長的路要走,但經(jīng)過第二屆“以身觀身”,我們已是在更高臺階上前進(jìn)了。

Foreword
In 2005, supported by various art institutions from Mainland China, the Macao Museum of Art successfully hosted “Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art”. In addition, by special arrangement of the Consulates General of France in Hong Kong and Macao, a number of outstanding artists were afforded the opportunity to visit France on an art exchange trip. Not only did this arrangement allow the significance of the exhibition to permeate the exhibition and its preservation but it enabled the artists to make the view-broadening field trips away from their places of abode. Internationally renowned organisers and art critics from the four regions across the Strait showered high praise on the Macao Museum of Art for its contribution to contemporary art in the Chinese-speaking world.
In 2008, with assistance from major art academies from Mainland China as well as art institutions from Hong Kong and Taiwan, the Macao Museum of Art - by means of organising “Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art 2008” - seeks to continue collecting and preserving precious documentaries of contemporary Chinese performance art, as well as further studying, displaying and promoting new works of contemporary Chinese art. The Museum is delighted to have renowned artists, organisers of performance art, as well as experts from China and overseas, joining and forming the judging committee. From the pool of submitted pieces, the committee will select some for collection, while other pieces will be earmarked for exhibition.
A unique form of expression in the realm of contemporary Chinese art, behavioural art tends to clash with traditional Chinese culture and values. The profound Chinese culture, as well as its inherent Confucian ideology, provide contemporary artists with a solid background for artistic creation. At a time when hatred and violence threaten peace, and disparity between the haves and have-nots becomes the Sword of Damocles over the head of globalisation, contemporary artists are continuously alerting the people and making them think with their art.
Necessity of Physical Involvement
Largely using the human body as the medium, behavioural art expresses its creativity via the process of individual performance, communicating with viewers by various means (e.g.) on-the-spot shows, video recordings, posed act photography, off-site records, and even webcams. It is an important genre of contemporary art, whose nature is individualised experiment and whose works tend to be counter-authoritarian and counter-uniformity, avant-garde and deviating from aesthetic preconceptions of traditional art with preconceived ideas. Its ‘performance’ also tends to differ from that of the traditionally defined, confined to no fixed system or framework, and is often based on certain daily but estranged acts, with pre-determined purposes of expression.
For behavioural artists, the human body is the unique and most powerful means of expression and therefore it is often invested with the artist’s most potent intention. While the human body is a tool of the most general commonality, it is also one of the most unique. Various goals may be achieved - such as subversion, challenge, resistance, rebellion, declaration - by means of, for example, disguise, modification and distortion of the human body, so as to construct the entire performance and reflect certain personal experiences in daily life as well as certain social phenomena in the development of society and culture. The human body becomes the irreplaceable symbol and language of the art, and used in different contexts the same body can generate different meanings. The following are some general characteristics of the body in behavioural art:
i) Reflection on society via non-violent cruelty to the body
One of the characteristics of behavioural art is that its works often call for reflection and criticism of social circumstances. Many works engage the body in some destructive acts of cruelty in such a way as to generate astounding sensations and cognitive reactions against the target social problems and pressures. In so doing, powerful accusations and representation are made with the body that leaves viewers with a shocking and unforgettable visual experience, stirring further reflection. Since, however, such acts are at most carried out with one’s own body and there is no harm or threat to other people, they are as most acts that seek to depict ‘violence’ via ‘non-violence’.
ii) Demonstration of physical extremes
Many works of behavioural art attempt to use the body to challenge certain limits, be they physical or psychological, and to go beyond existing conditions and abilities of human survival. In the process of ‘dehumanising’ the body, behavioural art continuously challenges and deconstructs existing beliefs and logical thinking, demolishing existing mental frameworks to stimulate discussion; the subversive nature of behavioural art is evident.
iii) Exploration of the body and Nature
With the body the quintessential element, these works of behavioural art associate the body with other natural things in existence, and thereby explore the delicate relationship between humanity and Nature, reflecting on survival.
iv) Struggle between the individual and the collective
Some works of behavioural art deliberately choose their inaction in certain public spaces to pronounce upon or challenge the traditional significance and symbol of authority in a public space, or to struggle against regional authority.
Looking forward from where we are
In “Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art 2008”, some 38 pieces of behavioural art by 27 artists from Changsha, Chengdu, Chongqing, Changcun, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Xining, Guangzhou, Kunming, Beijing, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan will be exhibited. Via these works - fully reflecting the development of Chinese behavioural art in the past three years - viewers can understand how artists involve and observe by means of the body, how they write via physical action, and how they express different ideas of artistic creation via Nature, physiology, memory, material, culture, identity, history and space.
In our call for behavioural art we did not attempt to define it, neither did we set a scope of work, as these days behavioural art tends to come in a multitude of guises, and indeed many artists are attempting to present their work through cross-media and cross-disciplinary approaches. Therefore, we attached priority to the artist’s representation of their individual avant-garde quality as much as the conceptual inspiration in the work because we are convinced that behavioural art needs variety.
In “Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art Archive”, the Macao Museum of Art offers a collection of 439 pieces of Chinese behavioural art, which may well lend themselves to exhibitions in various themes. Introducing and exhibiting these works in other countries and regions for the sake of exchange is precisely what we intended in the first place. A lot has yet to be done and likewise the promotion and development of behavioural art still has a long way to go. With this second “Inward Gazes”, however, we are well on our way to even greater accomplishments.
