總序
    作為一種藝術形式,沒有哪種藝術比行為藝術更能直接表達作者對人和事物的看法。
    由于這種藝術形式是以人本身參與藝術構成,并成為作品主體,所以作者往往會以最具震撼力的方式表達其創作意圖,手法千差萬別。也許正因如此,即使同是藝術家,甚至同是行為藝術工作者,對行為藝術的認知也存在差異。
    文學家透過文字思索苦難人生,發掘深度、廣度;畫家以一管春風筆勾勒大千世界,充實觀眾的視覺記憶。但文學作品依賴抽象的文字,傳統繪畫又僅從純視覺角度切入,始終不如以人為創作實體、以影像為記錄手段的行為藝術來得直截了當、乾淨俐落。
    不管你對行為藝術的認知處于甚麼層次,它自誕生之日始,就注定會在當代藝術的舞臺上穩佔一席之地。
    所以,在各種形式的作品中,觀眾會看到她在失落信仰、缺少權威、迷失于現實的年代,在權力磁場舉槍自轟;會在街道某個角落等待意料之外,又在意料之內的你的出現;會看見他揹上一百塊板磚,手持行李,徒步走向火車站,背負重擔離開原居城巿,藉此表達中國人最是熟悉不過的離鄉背井,作者以簡潔有力的方式與觀眾分享讓人心生哀愁的“國情”……。以身觀身,一切都是那麼荒謬,但又顯得合理;讓人哭笑不得,但又充滿精神痛苦的快感?!耙陨碛^身”語出老子《道德經》第五十四章:
    修之于身,其德乃真;修之于家,其德乃馀;修之于鄉,其德乃長;修之于國,其德乃豐;修之于天下,其德乃普。故以身觀身,以家觀家,以鄉觀鄉,以國觀國,以天下觀天下。
    對軀體、對生命的價值及意義,古今有著不同的詮釋,但縱觀今日兩岸四地行為藝術的創作,作者透過獨特的肢體語言傳遞他們對家、國、天下的思想及關愛,則古訓其庶幾乎!
    二零零五年,澳門藝術博物館成功舉辦首屆“以身觀身──中國行為藝術文獻展•邀請展”,得到當代藝術界的高度評價,在推動本地行為藝術方面也取得可喜的成績。今年,本館再接再厲,繼續收藏、推廣和推動行為藝術創作的工作,而本屆邀請展還擴展到亞洲地區,相信定能在藝術交流、開闊市民文化視野和擴展多維思考等方面有所作為。
    在普羅大眾眼中,可能有些行為藝術其藝術行為不可解,甚至不可理喻,但作者決非不食人間煙火,而是選擇以另一種形式表達對藝術、對人生的觀點和態度,這是觀念的藝術,假如觀眾事事求解,不免會陷入探索鄭板橋書法那剩馀三分半何在的誤區,反為所欺。也許求解行為藝術可以像陸九淵的哲學命題──心即理,應對其內涵反省內求,因為“理”在“心”中。
    如果你自覺欣賞作者的創作用心,就會與之同肝膽。如何以統一的標準去繙譯行為藝術,真的那麼重要嗎?還是讓我們放開懷抱,暫時摒除頭腦的干擾,以身、心感受一下這門身體主導的藝術,過屠門而大嚼,那是另一番風味的人間煙火。

Preface

 Of all art forms, performance art is the most straightforward medium through which the artist can express his or her views and feelings about human beings and objects.
 
 As human beings are employed as the subject as well as the object of this art form, artists tend to employ the most impactful way to express the purpose of their work. This is the reason that even artists have different understandings about performance art.
 
By means of words, writers explore the harsh life of Man to the deepest and widest boundaries; painters use their ‘miraculous brush’ to depict everything in this world, enriching the visual experience and memory of us all. But from a purely visual perspective, none is more clear-cut and straightforward than the performance art works that use Man as the performing subject and solid visual images as a means of recording. Literary works or traditional paintings are perhaps no match in this regard.

No matter how you view performance art, it was bound to assume an irreplaceable position from the day of its inception into the arena of art.

 In the works of this genre, viewers may see the subject of a work commit suicide with a gun, be bogged down in a state of faithlessness, lawless and lost in bewildering reality and in the magnetic field of power; and in some corner along the street waiting for the expected as well as the unexpected appearance of ‘you’. With one hundred bricks on his back, and luggage in hand, he heads to the railway station, leaving his hometown, fully loaded, for his unknown destiny - an experience we Chinese are most familiar with. The sorrowful National Experience is shared in a clinical manner … See the situation in the shoes of the subjects, where everything seems so ridiculous and yet at the same time not without reason - one does not know if one should cry or laugh. But at the same time one senses a kind of pleasure with this spiritual suffering. The fifty-fourth chapter of the Tao Te Ching by Lao-tzu reads:

When applied to oneself, one’s virtues become real. To one’s family, they become abundant. To the community, extensive. To the nation, flourishing. To the world, universal. Therefore, one should view oneself from the perspective of oneself, and likewise the family from that of the family, the community from that of the community, the nation from that of the nation, and the world from that of the world.

Hence, the viewing of oneself from the perspective of oneself. There are different interpretations about the value and significance of life nowadays as well as in the past but when we look at today’s works of performance art from either side of the Strait via the language of the body we cannot fail to see the love and care embodied in the works for the family, the country and the world. The preaching of the ancient sages are still heeded!

In 2005, the exhibition entitled “Inward Gazes: Documentaries of Chinese Performance Art” was successfully hosted by the Macao Museum of Art and highly acclaimed by modern art circles. It contributed much to the promotion of behavioral art in the region. This year, the Museum will go further in continuing to promote performance art. This year’s exhibition will be extended to other Asian regions, which will be invaluable in encouraging the sharing of art, widening citizens’ cultural horizons and broadening multi-dimensional thinking, among other benefits.


In the eyes of ordinary people, some of the behaviour of performance art is not easily comprehended, and even appears unreasonable; however, the creators are determined not to be ordinary and choose to express their point of view and attitudes about art and life through new channels of expression. If the viewer seeks every explanation, he or she may sink deep into the folly of seeking explanation of Chinese calligraphy where in a work certain strokes might be missing, thereby missing the whole meaning. Maybe we should seek meaning in performance art through the philosophy of Lu Jiuyuan: reason lies within the heart.

 If you think you are in the same vein as these artists, you will naturally see the meaning in their works. Is it that important to have a uniform approach to explaining performance art? Why don’t we open our hearts and embrace performance art? Forget all the boundaries and enjoy ourselves. This, then, becomes another kind of taste in life.

民政總署轄下澳門藝術博物館全力策劃、主辦“以身觀身—亞洲行為藝術邀請展2008”,共邀請十五位亞洲著名的當代藝術家近三十件觀念藝術作品參展,受邀藝術家分別來自中國內地、臺灣、日本、韓國、新加坡、泰國、越南、菲律賓、印尼、緬甸等地。希望通過文化藝術的多元、多向的交流,增進不同群體的相互了解與尊重,同時盼望藉此推動中國及亞洲地區行為藝術的發展。
在全球一體化的今天,亞洲各國藝術家們在各自不同的文化背景下,以不同的方式強而有力地提出了種種思考。亞洲是什麼?亞洲文化的面貌是怎樣的?為亞洲下定義很困難,為亞洲文化下定義更是困難。二十世紀九十年代,全球化進程的浪潮衝擊著有著深厚歷史文化背景的亞洲,逐漸喚起了亞洲人的本土意識,在亞洲眾多國家中,不同城市、區域、族群、個人在各自的文化背景與各自的文化發展歷程中,已經形成了一定的力量,這股文化能否擺脫歐美文化的主導,各自呈現獨特的文化面貌?而這種文化面貌又會是怎麼樣的呢?毎一個國家、城市的本土意識與本土力量又是怎麼樣的呢?相互之間是否有著什麼獨特而可以借鑒的地方?在這次邀請展中,我們應該可以從作品中發掘出彼此相近卻又獨特的文化特質。亞洲文化當與西方文化建立相互切磋、啟發的平等關係。藝術家對全人類面臨的現實社會問題和精神問題,必須保持獨立的批判態度。
亞洲行為藝術經歷了近二十年的發展,優秀藝術家不斷湧現。近十年來,亞洲各國對先鋒藝術普遍持開放、包容的積極態度。亞洲地區的國際行為藝術節蓬勃發展,為各國藝術家提供了廣泛的交流渠道,雖然公眾對行為藝術的認受性目前還遠遠不及傳統繪畫或攝影等,但藝術家們出於對藝術真誠的無償付出及執著認真的精神,已經使社會對藝術的普遍認受性大大提高了,這一點是令人鼓舞的。
藝術史本身就是一部創造史。藝術家在社會上尋找各類實驗的舞臺,思考著各種可能性,不論經歷多少成敗,大膽嘗試才是創造的前提。執筆之時,西方奉行的“新自由主義經濟”造成的金融海嘯波及亞洲,亞洲各國正經歷另一次的經濟震盪。在這風雨飄搖之際,正好讓亞洲藝術家們一同進入文化反思之中。

Foreword
 
To the exhibition “Inward Gazes: Invitation Asia Performance Art 2008– excellently prepared and hosted by the Macao Museum of Art of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau - are invited 15 famous contemporary Asian artists, who represent between them some 30 conceptual art works. These artists are from countries such as Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Myanmar. It is hoped that through this multilateral cultural exchange, communication and co-operation between different cultures and art entities can be enhanced; and beyond that, the further development of performance art in China and other regions of Asia.
 
In the era of globalisation, artists from Asia have forcefully presented their thoughts in different cultural contexts. What is Asia? What is the culture of Asia? It is difficult to define “Asia” and even more so to define “Asian culture”. Globalisation arrived in Asia in the 1990s, in a continent boasting a long history and rich cultural heritages, which awakened the inhabitants' sense of identity. The Asian peoples - of different nationalities, cities, regions and groups - have nurtured a variety of cultural strains of their own. But can these keep them free from the dominance of Euro-American culture and bring their own unique cultural facets to the fore? And what are these cultural facets to be like? What is peoples' sense of identity and what are their strengths as far as each city and country is concerned? Are there any peculiarities that they can share with one another? Here in this exhibition, we should be able to uncover some of these features in the art works. There should be a relationship of equality, mutual learning and communication between the cultures of Asia and the West. And artists must take an independent and critical stance on the existing social and spiritual issues affecting all human beings.
 
Performance Art in Asia has some 20 years of history, during which time numerous outstanding artists have emerged. In the last ten years, countries in Asia have mostly embraced avant-garde art with an open and positive attitude. International Performance Art Festivals in Asia provide a broad platform for communications and exchanges among artists in various countries. At present, though, performance art is not as accepted as the traditional art of painting or photography - but it is increasingly accepted by individuals who are impressed with the genuine, voluntary and earnest spirit of the artists. This, in particular, is extremely encouraging.  
 
The history of the Arts is about creativity. Artists continue to seek a stage on which they can explore more freely. Regardless of success or failure, actions, for sure, are the prerequisite of creativity. As I write this, Asia is enduring the financial tsunami caused by neo-liberal economic policies. Countries in Asia are experiencing another economic upheaval. Nevertheless, it does give the artists of Asia an opportunity to reflect on culture and art in these challenging times.
