SHEPHERDS FIELD VILLAGE CHILDREN AT 798
Ten children from the Shepherds Field Village will be at the opening of an annual art exhibition created to provide funding support for the Beijing orphanage.
The exhibition, Living Space, opens at the 798 l Red Gate Gallery on 22 November 2008.
2008 marks the 6th successive year for Red Gate Gallery to host the Philip Hayden Foundation: Contemporary Printmaking Calendar and Exhibition.
The project is the initiative of the gallery director, Brian Wallace, who wanted to acknowledge the valuable work being done by the Philip Hayden Foundation for orphaned and needy children in China.
Brian Wallace looked to ways that Red Gate could be involved in the work of this non-profit charity.
He says: The project is a unique way of bringing the Chinese public, the (Philip Hayden Foundation) charity and the art world into contact with each other.
The resultant collaboration offers an important contribution to the Shepherds’ Field Children’s Village, a project of the Philip Hayden Foundation, as the proceeds of sales flow directly to the charity *. It is a collaboration that extends to the core of Chinese artists who provide the lithographs, wood-cuts, etchings and silk-screen prints, and the dedicated collectors who annually purchase a calendar of original, editioned prints. Some collectors have the entire sequence from 2004 to 2008.
* 60% of total proceeds will be donated to the Shepherds’ Field Children’s Village
40% will be given to the artists to cover production costs and fees

The 2008 exhibition, titled Living Space, addresses the theme of environmental protection with the works representing various aspects of our living space. Living space may be read as spaces in which people live – the natural and built environments. It may also be interpreted as spaces which are alive and living – with or without human habitation. The artists are addressing the condition of our living space and our individual and collective responsibilities to ensuring the protection of our increasingly fragile ecology.
The artists have established reputations as printmakers and are regular exhibitors at galleries throughout China and overseas.
Each artist has produced an original print in an edition of 50.
The works are signed, dated and numbered by the artist.
The prints are packaged as 50 calendars – each calendar containing seven editioned prints. The collector who purchases a calendar may choose to retain the works in calendar form or have each mounted as seven distinctive artworks.
The 2008 exhibition of contemporary printmaking opens at the 798 l Red Gate Gallery on Saturday 22 November.
ARTISTS: He Kun, Zhang Guanghui, Su Xinping, Zhou Jirong, Tang Chenghua, Lu Zhiping and Xu Baozhong
